Overview of ITI Diploma
ITI means – Industrial Training Institutes like ITI Polytechnic is an institute where you can get diploma related to any subject but there is a lot of difference between ITI and Polytechnic. All the diplomats of polytechnics are completed in about 3 years, while the ITI has diplomas ranging from 6 months to 2 years. So if you want to get diploma related to any subject then you can do diploma from IIT but for this, your educational qualification should be at least till tenth standard.
The ITI course is one of the most popular among students from a mostly rural environment. The main reason for the popularity of this course is to pay special attention to the syllabus and courses related to the skill development designed by it in engineering or non-engineering trades, because after doing ITI you can easily find government and private jobs. But if you want to study further after doing ITI, then you can do polytechnic after ITI and after polytechnic you can study for graduate degree.
How to take admission in ITI
To get admission in ITI courses, a candidate needs to be eligible for the course first, only then they will be able to apply for it. Eligibility criteria vary from one course to another as the qualifications can range from 8th pass to 12th pass.
- The entry process in ITI for each trade starts in the month of August every year. The Craftsmen Training Scheme (CTS) [Craftsperson Training Scheme (CTS)] starts from 1 August every year.
- Admissions under the National Council on Vocational Training (NCVT) are done on the basis of merit list and written examination marks, while admission to private [private] ITI is given directly without any examination.
- Students of any board like CBSE, ICSE or other state boards of education can apply for ITI courses.

Types of ITI courses
Generally, ITI provides training in two broad categories of its trades. These trades are classified as:
- Engineering Trades / Courses
- Non-Engineering Trade / Courses
1. Engineering Trade / Courses: – Engineering courses / trade are technical courses related to the field of engineering studies. These trades mainly focus on the concepts of engineering, mathematics, science and technical terms. ITI’s engineering curriculum is a better focus option for students who want to pursue technical education.
2. Non-engineering trades / courses: – Non-engineering courses / trades as the name itself suggests – are non-technical in nature. These trades are mostly related to computer, language and soft skills and specialized knowledge. ITI’s engineering courses are generally of longer duration than ITI non-engineering courses.
Career options after ITI
After doing ITI diploma, the biggest question is what should we do after ITI? Or what is a better career option after doing ITI? If the ITI diploma holders can make a better career by doing higher studies after doing ITI, then they can also get jobs in government and private sector. If you have recently done ITI diploma and want to get a job, then you will get a job in private company from 8000 to ₹ 10000. And you can get good salary in government job even if you have recently done ITI diploma. It depends on which department and in which position you will get the job.

ITI students can also take the All India Trade Test (AITT) conducted by NCVT.

All india trade test
AITT or All India Trade Test is a better test exam for ITI students after completion of ITI syllabus which is conducted by All India Trade Test NCVT (National Council for Vocational Training). This exam is virtually a skill test that certifies ITI students. After passing the AITT, students are awarded the National Trade Certificate (NTC) by NCVT in the related trade and its certificate is equivalent to the NTC diploma, degree in a lot of engineering trades.
Apprenticeship after ITI
Apprenticeship is a dual training system in which the trainee acquires both on-the-job training (OJT) and classroom related instruction under industry supervision. Through this, the trainees learn the practical and theoretical aspects of skilled business. Apprenticeship is a skill or qualification training of 1 or 1.5 years, in which the trainee is also given a few rupees. Also, you can get a permanent job in the same organization. Therefore, after doing ITI course from any trade, you should first do apprenticeship related to your trade, which you can do in both government and private sector. After apprentice, you get job opportunities in both government and private sectors.
Specialized Short Term Courses
For some specialized trades or private ITI students, Advanced Training Institute (ATI) offers specialized short-term courses. These courses help the students to enhance their skills further, it can be easily fulfilled in the respective domain to meet their job profile or industry requirements and then get the job.

There are various job opportunities for ITI students like other vocational and vocational courses. Various government organizations, private companies and even foreign companies on ITI campus also recruit students for jobs through placement selection.
Job in Public Sectors
ITI provides a golden career opportunity for students in public sector or government agency. Students who have undergone ITI training can seek employment in various public sector units like Railways, Telecom / BSNL, IOCL, ONCG, State-wise PWD, whereas in Government sector they can find employment in Indian Armed Forces i.e. Indian Army like Indian Navy, One can search for jobs in Air Force, Border Security Force (BSF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and other paramilitary forces etc.
